Danny walked into the station the following day to find the captain and a few detectives watching the news on the television set against the wall. There was a picture of their victim shown with the news anchor asking anyone who may know him to come forward and identify him.

Danny sat at his desk after putting his gun and badge in his drawer and watched the news report as well.

“The police still have no leads on this killer known only as Stones by locals, and the people of the city are questioning whether or not the department can keep them safe. This is the second active serial killer in the city in two years. The killer known as Bullseye, or Jack Waters, escaped a prison transport on his way to maximum holding last year. Detectives have yet to trace his whereabouts and cannot even confirm if it’s him committing these murders as well.”

The captain muted the television and turned to look at Danny, who held his hands up. “I’ll be down at the morgue as soon as Richard arrives.”

Baker looked at him for a moment before going to his office and shutting the door. It wasn’t long after that when Richard walked in and set a coffee on Danny’s table. “Morning, sunshine, how much shit are you in?”

“Don’t sit. We need to go get the report from the morgue.” Danny retrieved his gun and badge and picked up his coffee, leading Richard out. “And I’m in deep shit with Cleo.”

Richard smiled knowingly. “This is why…”

“You don’t have kids,” Danny finished the sentence as he unlocked the car. “And you know what, I still wouldn’t trade with you.”

They pulled out of the parking lot, and Danny drove them to the morgue, their police scanner the only sound in the car.

Florentine looked up as they walked in. “We have March, gentleman. It’s definitely your guy.”

He pointed to a plastic bag that held a cube in it. Richard looked at it closely. “I’ve been reading up on these birthstones; this must be aquamarine.”

Danny looked at Florentine. “Please tell me you have something we can use.”

“He was very big on the outdoors judging by the dirt under his nails and his tan. He also has rough hands, so he worked with them. Unfortunately, I don’t have much else. The clothes are just standard items you could get at any general store, and there’s no dirt under the shoes, so they must be new.”

“Wait, was there dirt under any of the other victims’ shoes?” Danny asked.

Florentine looked at him over his glasses. “Actually, no, there wasn’t.”

“They aren’t being posed in the clothes they were in. He’s dressing them up,” Danny turned to Richard. “And I bet this guy was killed on his birthday like Bianca and Donovan.”

“But how does he know what their birthdays are and where they’ll be?” Richard asked, looking at the body.

Danny put his hands on his hips. “There must be something that connects them. We need to find what that is. We need to first identify this guy and then see what he shares with the other two.
